The beauty industry has long been hailed as a realm of boundless creativity, where self-expression and individuality thrive. It is a space where personal identity is celebrated and self-confidence is nurtured. These compelling attributes of the industry resonated deeply with House of Dear founder Holly Dear, who spent two decades working behind the chair. However, as her experience grew, so did her realization of a glaring gap that needed to be addressed: clean, gender-inclusive haircare.
"I've been on the front lines of product development for decades and I have seen the evolution of gender being taken out of the conversation."
In celebration of Pride month, as an LGBTQIA+ owned brand, we delve into Holly's journey and the transformative vision that led her to champion the cause of gender-inclusivity in the beauty industry. We celebrate how her passion for creativity and self-expression merged with a resolute commitment to provide clean and inclusive haircare solutions, ultimately reshaping the landscape of beauty products.
The House of Dear product line came to life within the very walls of the Holly's salon, House of Dear Hair Salon in Dallas, Texas. It emerged as a direct response to the daily scalp-related concerns she and her team of stylists witnessed firsthand. These issues were often only superficially addressed by existing haircare products available in the market, merely masking the problems, without truly addressing their underlying causes. Additionally, the available products predominantly catered to either male or female consumers, disregarding the fact that scalp issues are genderless. Holly states, "it is a misrepresentation that men and women need different products. Your scalp is your scalp." After all, hair itself does not recognize gender.
Holly embarked on a mission to develop a revolutionary line of products that would not only provide effective solutions for scalp issues but also shatter the limitations of gender-specific haircare. The House of Dear product line was meticulously crafted to transcend traditional boundaries, acknowledging that scalp health and haircare needs are universal, regardless of gender identity.
"It's time to treat scalp issues without defining who it is for."
At House of Dear, our mission extends beyond the boundaries of our salon and permeates through every aspect of our products. We are dedicated to fostering an inclusive community that embraces diversity and empowers every client and customer to declare their right to self-expression. In our Dallas salon, we proudly offer genderless haircuts and services, recognizing that haircare is a personal journey that transcends traditional gender norms. Our commitment to inclusivity extends to every aspect, including our product line, which has been meticulously formulated to be completely gender-neutral in both scent and use case.
Our gender-neutral products are carefully crafted to meet the diverse needs of our clients without adhering to outdated gender or race stereotypes. From the choice of ingredients to the thoughtfully curated scents, every aspect of our products has been designed to be inclusive and versatile, allowing individuals to embrace their personal style and preferences.
In conclusion, for Holly, the salon and the House of Dear products are more than just a business venture. They represent her heartfelt dedication to creating a safe haven—an inclusive community where individuals from all walks of life can find solace and support.
Reflecting on her vision, Holly emphasizes, "I want people to see themselves in our campaigns and on our Instagram feed and know that we can help them with their scalp and hair issues, in a natural and clean ingredient-based way."

]]>While growing a beard may seem like a simple task, maintaining it can be a challenge. Regardless if you're working with a long beard, short beard, or even a mustache, the key to growth is a healthy beard care routine. One of the most important aspects of maintaining a beard is using the right shampoo and conditioner, followed with clean grooming products. That is why we have put together 3 steps to grooming like a pro and 5 benefits of shampooing and conditioning your beard.
A well-groomed beard can make you look ruggedly handsome, and it can also be a sign of confidence and self-care. However, maintaining a healthy and presentable beard requires more than just occasional trimming and shaping. Regular shampooing and conditioning are crucial for keeping your beard healthy and looking its best. Let's explore the top 5 reasons to shampoo and condition your beard, as well as why using clean ingredients matters.
Beards can become dry and itchy due to the buildup of dead skin cells, oils, and dirt. This can cause dandruff or "beardruff," which is a common problem among people with beards. Shampooing your beard helps to remove dead skin cells and dirt, preventing dandruff and itchiness. Next, conditioning your beard can also help to moisturize and soothe the skin, reducing the likelihood of dandruff and itchiness. We recommend House of Dear's Resurrecting Wash & Rinse.
The House of Dear Resurrecting Wash shampoo contains aloe vera to deeply hydrate the skin, while also washing away debris and deep skin. Our Resurrecting Rinse conditioner is designed to be applied directly to the skin and is formulated with rose of jericho to add and lock in moisture leaving your skin and beard feeling soothed and hydrated.
Shampooing and conditioning your beard can promote healthy hair growth by removing debris that may clog hair follicles. This can help to prevent ingrown hairs and promote new hair growth. Additionally, conditioning your beard can help to strengthen and nourish the hair, making it less prone to breakage and split ends.
A beard can quickly become dirty and smelly, especially if you eat or drink with it. Shampooing and conditioning your beard helps to keep it clean and fresh-smelling. This is particularly important if you have a long beard, as food particles and dirt can easily get trapped in the hairs. Another added benefit to the Resurrecting Wash & Rinse is its gender neutral signature scent.
A well-maintained beard can improve your overall appearance, making you look more polished and put-together. Shampooing and conditioning your beard can help to soften and tame unruly hairs, making it easier to style. Additionally, conditioning your beard can help to add shine and luster, making it look healthy and vibrant.
Shampooing and conditioning your beard can also help to hydrate the skin beneath the hair. This is important, as the skin can become dry and irritated due to the natural oils in the hair. Conditioning your beard can help to lock in moisture and soothe the skin, reducing the risk of dryness and irritation.
When it comes to beard grooming products, using clean ingredients matters. Clean ingredients are those that are safe for you and the environment. They are free from harmful chemicals and synthetic fragrances that can irritate your skin and cause other health problems, like hormone imbalances that lead to hair loss.
When choosing a shampoo, conditioner and styling products for your beard, look for products that contain natural ingredients like aloe vera, sunflower seed extract, cocoa butter, coconut oil, or shea butter. These ingredients are known for their moisturizing and conditioning properties and are safe for all skin types. These are all key ingredients in House of Dear products, a few of the benefits include:
Avoid products that contain sulfates, parabens, and synthetic fragrances, as these can cause skin irritation and other health problems.
Now the three essential steps to help you grow and maintain your best beard, elevating your grooming routine to professional levels!

Your hair is an essential aspect of your physical appearance and can play a significant role in your self-confidence. However, various hormones in your body can affect the health of your scalp and growth of your hair.
Hair growth is a complex process involves a delicate balance of various factors. Understanding the hair growth cycle and how hormones affect it can help you combat hair loss and choose the right products for your hair care routine. In this blog post, we'll explore the different stages of hair growth, how hormones affect hair health, and how you can help treat hair loss and promote healthy hair growth.
Hair growth is a natural process that occurs in cycles. Each hair follicle undergoes a series of phases, namely the anagen (growth), catagen (transition), and telogen (resting) phases. During the anagen phase, which lasts for several years, hair grows actively. During the catagen phase, which lasts for a few weeks, the hair follicle begins to shrink and detach from the dermal papilla, which supplies blood and nutrients to the hair. Finally, during the telogen phase, which lasts for several months, the hair rests and eventually falls out, making way for a new hair to grow.
The duration of each phase varies depending on various factors, including genetics, age, and hormonal fluctuations. Hormones play a crucial role in regulating the hair growth cycle. Hormones such as androgens, estrogens, endocrines, and thyroid hormones can disrupt the hair growth in both men and women by affecting the duration of each phase.
Hair loss is a common problem that affects many people, and it can be caused by a variety of factors, including hormonal imbalances. Now let's explore how five hormones – cortisol, DHT, estrogen, thyroid, testosterone, and insulin – can impact your hair.
Cortisol is a hormone that is released in response to stress. It is known as the "stress hormone." It plays an important role in the body's stress response and helps regulate blood sugar levels, blood pressure, and immune function.
Elevated cortisol levels can cause hair follicles to prematurely enter the telogen phase, leading to increased hair shedding and thinning. Additionally, cortisol can reduce the production of estrogen and testosterone, which are hormones that play a crucial role in hair growth.
DHT, or dihydrotestosterone, is a derivative of testosterone that is produced in the hair follicles, sebaceous glands, and adrenal glands.
DHT affects the hair growth cycle by shortening the anagen phase and lengthening the telogen phase. DHT can cause hair loss by binding to hair follicles and shrinking them. This causes the hair follicle to produce shorter, thinner hair, and eventually, the hair stops growing altogether. DHT also causes inflammation, which can damage the hair follicle and further contribute to hair loss.
Estrogen is a hormone that is primarily associated with female development. However, both men and women have estrogen in their bodies.
While estrogen can promote hair growth, it can also contribute to hair loss in certain situations. When estrogen levels are high, such as during pregnancy or while taking hormonal birth control, the hair growth cycle is prolonged, which can result in thicker and fuller hair. However, when estrogen levels drop, such as after giving birth or stopping hormonal birth control, the hair growth cycle can be disrupted, resulting in hair loss.
Estrogen can also contribute to hair loss during menopause. As women age, their estrogen levels naturally decrease, which can result in thinning hair and hair loss. This is because estrogen helps to protect hair follicles from the effects of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone that can damage hair follicles and lead to hair loss.
The thyroid gland produces hormones that regulate the body's metabolism. When the thyroid gland is overactive or under-active, it can lead to hair loss. This is because the hair growth cycle is directly linked to the body's metabolic rate.
Thyroid hormones affect hair growth in several ways. Firstly, they control the rate at which hair follicles grow and the quality of the hair produced. An imbalance in thyroid hormone levels can lead to abnormal hair growth, such as thinning, hair loss, or even excessive hair growth.
Secondly, thyroid hormones also affect the hair growth cycle. Thyroid hormones play a vital role in regulating the duration of each phase of the hair growth cycle. An imbalance in thyroid hormone levels can lead to disruptions in the hair growth cycle, resulting in hair loss or reduced hair growth.
Finally, thyroid hormones also affect the structure and texture of hair. Thyroid hormones regulate the production of keratin, which is the primary protein that makes up hair. An imbalance in thyroid hormone levels can lead to changes in the quality of hair produced, such as dry, brittle hair or hair that is overly soft and fragile.
Hormones, particularly androgens like testosterone, can impact hair growth by stimulating hair follicles and promoting hair growth (primarily associated with male development). However, both men and women have testosterone in their bodies. Over production of testosterone can affect hair growth by shortening the anagen phase and prolonging the telogen phase. This can result in hair loss and thinning, particularly in individuals with a genetic predisposition to androgenetic alopecia, also known as "male-pattern baldness." However, as we have already discussed, testosterone can also be converted to DHT.
DHT causes the hair follicles to shrink, resulting in shorter and thinner hair strands. Over time, the hair follicles can become so small that they stop producing hair altogether.
Insulin is a hormone that regulates blood sugar levels in the body. When the body becomes resistant to insulin, it can lead to a condition called insulin resistance.
Insulin resistance can disrupt this growth cycle by prolonging the anagen phase and delaying the onset of the resting phase (catagen phase). This can result in an overproduction of hair, which can be seen in conditions like hirsutism (excessive hair growth) or polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).
Insulin resistance also can cause hair loss by reducing the amount of blood flow to the hair follicles. This can starve the hair follicles of nutrients and oxygen, leading to hair loss.
Fortunately, there are ways to treat hair loss and promote healthy hair growth. One effective solution is House of Dear's Resurrecting Wash and Rinse, a clean haircare system designed to restore hair health and promote growth.
The Resurrecting Wash shampoo contains ingredients like aloe vera, a natural exfoliant, which brings thousands of antioxidants to the scalp helping with inflammation and blood circulation. Additionally, aloe vera soothes the hair and the scalp to deeply clean and reduce inflammation.
Then the Rose of Jericho provides intense hydration, while work together with sunflower seed extract that serves as a natural UV protectant, SPF, and thermal protection to protect the the scalp from the sun and other external irritants.
The Resurrecting Rinse conditioner also contains ingredients such as aloe vera, Rose of Jericho and sunflower seed extract, but also hydrolyzed lupine protein that serves as a natural strengthening agent, and prickly pear which helps volumize hair and enhance shine.
The House of Dear Resurrecting Wash and Rinse were designed to work perfectly together to target and treat your scalp. What makes this combination different and effective, is that both the Wash and the Rinse can be applied directly to the scalp in comparison to competitors that only target the ends of the strand when it comes to hydration.

So if you're looking for a solution to hair loss or just want to promote healthy hair growth, give House of Dear's Resurrecting Wash and Rinse a try.

Also known as scalp massagers and scalp scrubbers, scalp brushes are handheld tools with flexible bristles or silicone tips designed to massage and exfoliate the scalp to achieve maximum hair health. Which scalp brush is right for you will vary based on hair types and personal preference, but are ultimately a fabulous tool for the scalp regardless of hair type and even with or without hair.
Elevating your in-shower haircare routine by adding in a scalp massage is an obvious benefit when it comes to stress relief and relaxation. We also understand that adding a step to wash day can be a BIG decision so we compiled the top 5 benefits of using a scalp brush.
If we have said it once, we've said it a thousand times, "scalp care is skincare." Your scalp actually ages 6x faster than your face and needs to be exfoliated just the same. Using a scalp brush can help to remove dead skin cells, excess oil, and other impurities that can clog hair follicles and lead to hair loss. By exfoliating the scalp, you are creating a clean and healthy environment for your hair to grow.
Using a scalp brush can also help to stimulate hair growth by increasing blood flow to the hair follicles. This increased blood flow brings more oxygen and nutrients to the scalp, which can help to promote healthy hair growth. Additionally, the gentle massage that a scalp brush provides can help to loosen any tension in the scalp, which can also promote hair growth.
Scalp brushes can also help to improve the texture of your hair by distributing natural oils throughout the hair shaft, along with using hydrating haircare products with clean formulas, like House of Dear. By using a scalp brush to massage the scalp, you are encouraging the production of sebum, which is the natural oil that helps to keep hair healthy and shiny. By distributing this oil throughout your hair, you can help to reduce frizz and improve the overall texture of your hair.
Dandruff is a common scalp condition that can be caused by a variety of factors, including dry skin, oily skin and fungal infections. Using a scalp brush can help to reduce dandruff by exfoliating the scalp and removing any buildup of dead skin cells or excess oil. Additionally, the massage action of the scalp brush can help to stimulate the scalp and increase blood flow, which can help to reduce inflammation and itching associated with dandruff.
Using a scalp brush can help to distribute shampoo or other hair care products more evenly across the scalp. This can help to improve product absorption and ensure that your hair and scalp are getting the maximum benefit from the products you use, like the House of Dear Resurrecting Wash and Rinse.
In conclusion, using a scalp brush has numerous benefits for both scalp and hair health. From promoting hair growth to reducing dandruff and improving hair texture, a scalp brush in combination with House of Dear's clean haircare products are an essential tool for anyone looking to improve their overall hair health.

Don’t let salt and sun wreak havoc on those lovely locks!
Before you step out into the summer sun, you lather up with sunscreen. But do you protect your hair from sun damage?
That’s right – just like skin, your hair and scalp need protection from the sun and fun of summer. Here are five tips to keep in mind as you move through the hot summer months.
Throw on a Hat
We’ll take any excuse to buy new clothes for a new season. Wide-brimmed straw hats are so chic—and in addition to protecting your face from getting too much sun, they’ll protect your scalp from getting sunburnt. (Of course, you should still keep the SPF handy!) Keep your hair out of the sun all day...and look great doing it. Win-win.
Create a Protective Barrier
The most enjoyable things about summer—warm weather, time outdoors, exploring and swimming—can really take their toll on the hair. Before you indulge in summer fun, pre-soak your strands with fresh water, and slather it in a leave-in conditioning cream. Already soaked in pure, nourishing, protective things, hair will be less likely to absorb damaging elements like chlorine and salt.
Cleanse The Day Away
Chlorine and salt have a dehydrating effect on hair that can cause a loss of elasticity and lead to damage. Effective, gentle cleansing and deep moisturization are key to protecting hair from the sun. An ultra-moisturizing shampoo and conditioner like the House of Dear Resurrecting Wash and Rinse, which is packed with clean hair healing ingredients, should be part of your routine.
Keep Your Scalp Healthy
We know that a healthy scalp means healthy hair. A leave-in treatment like the House of Dear Resurrecting Balm is not only great for all over your scalp and strands post-shower, but it's lightweight enough to refresh and protect your hair throughout the day without ruining your 'do. Since it has Rose of Jericho, Sunflower seed oil and Pure Aloe Vera, it strengthens, hydrates, and restores your hair and scalp instantly.
Plus the sunflower oil in all of our products contains vitamin E and acts as a natural sunscreen which can absorb UVB light.
Make SPF Your New BFF
This is just solid advice all around, for hair and skin. Apply sunscreen throughout the day to your face, arms, legs, back...any part of your body that’s being exposed to the sun. And that includes your hair.
It Comes Down to Proper Protection
The sun is — and will continue to be — a problem for hair. But by learning how to protect and restore your hair from sun damage you can maintain a healthy head of hair without sacrificing fun in the sun.
We’ve all heard that silk pillowcases are good for hair and skin, but how real are those claims? Put simply: very real. While sleeping on a silk pillowcase has a ton of benefits, like reducing acne and improving sleep, it’s actually been proven to be most beneficial for hair. So what exactly can a silk pillowcase do for your hair?
Reduce Breakage
Because silk is so, well… silky, it minimizes friction. This means your hair can move freely and without resistance as you toss and turn in your sleep. This helps reduce immediate breakage, as well as tangles which eventually lead to breakage. It’s plain and simple: less friction = less split ends and broken stray-aways.
Fight Frizz
Silk is the only naturally occurring filament fiber, meaning it doesn’t need to be woven together like other fibers. That allows it to be incredibly smooth, since there are no vertices within the fabric. This perfect smoothness, as mentioned above, eliminates friction, which is one of the leading causes of frizzy hair. So, waking up with bed-head is a lot less likely when you’ve slept on a silk pillowcase.
Lock in Moisture
Silk is naturally not very absorbent, meaning it won’t soak up your hair's natural oils. While cotton pulls the moisture out of your locks, silk helps lock it in. Hydration is the number one factor when it comes to healthy hair - it's what makes your locks soft and shiny. Plus, a silk pillowcase will help keep your scalp hydrated too, and a healthy scalp is the root of healthy hair!
Given how much time you spend sleeping (usually about 8 hours per night), it’s important to treat your hair right during that time! We’ve made the case that a silky pillow means silkier hair, but it’s not a magic fix-all solution. Ultimately, the products you use matter more than anything. Wondering what products your hair needs to look and feel its best? Take the haircare quiz and shop the House of Dear Collection!
To The Shop]]>When you think of leading haircare brands like L’Oreal and Pantene, you’re probably not aware of the widespread animal cruelty that goes into the production of these products.
While many haircare products may claim to be cruelty free, that’s often a bold-faced lie. The claims “cruelty free” and “no animal testing” actually don’t have any regulation within the U.S., meaning these terms are practically worthless. “The Leaping Bunny Logo is the only internationally recognized symbol guaranteeing consumers that no new animal tests were used in the development of any product displaying it.”
In order for a product to get the Leaping Bunny Certification, it’s required that all raw ingredients, fragrances, and manufacturers are 100% cruelty free with absolutely no animal testing.
The unfortunate truth is that compared to the massive amount of haircare products being sold, very few of them actually adhere to the Leaping Bunny guidelines. In fact, 88% of top beauty companies fund animal testing. At House of Dear, we believe that no animal should suffer on behalf of our products, so that’s why we are proudly Leaping Bunny certified. We’re avid pioneers of standardizing cruelty-free testing methods, and we encourage our customers to support the movement as well.
We believe that at some point in the hopefully near future, all products will be held to this standard. Younger generations are demanding more from corporate-world ethics, and animal testing is an outdated, unnecessary tactic that will not be tolerated by future generations. Actually, 70% of people worldwide believe that animal testing should be banned. So far one fifth of all countries have banned animal testing, but the U.S. is not one of them (yet). The fact of the matter is that consumers hold the power in pushing this movement forward. Continuing to support companies that use these archaic practices is perpetuating the problem. By choosing products that are Leaping Bunny Certified, consumers can essentially vote with their money to save helpless animals from abuse and build a more compassionate, humane future.
Certified cruelty-free products are an expression of respect for the animals that we share this incredible planet with. From cuddly bunnies to intelligent monkeys, an estimated 500,000 of our fuzzy friends are being tortured and killed by cosmetics-related animal testing practices every year. That’s just the cosmetics industry alone… if you zoom out and look at animal testing as a whole, that number jumps to over 100 million. Animals are restrained while chemicals are forced into their eyes, skin, and mouths, and that’s just a small glimpse into the horror. Many of the animals are killed when testing is completed. Needless to say, this abuse is full of pain, and cannot even be “justified” by the notion that this sort of testing is a necessary evil to protect humans.
Modern science has come a long way since the inception of animal testing, and the same results can be determined without the use of cruelty against a living creature. There are very few modern circumstances in which cosmetics-related animal testing be should be considered “the only way” to determine whether or not a product is safe for human use. A scientific report released in 2007 identified how modern methods can rely on human cells, rather than living creatures, which results in tests being more efficient, informative, and less costly.
What do you stand for, and how do your consumer-based actions align with your values? It’s time to step into the future and raise the bar of what is and is not acceptable. If you’d like to support us in our efforts to modernize the cosmetics industry, take the haircare quiz and shop the House of Dear Collection.
To The Shop]]>For many of us, our hair's a huge part of our identity. We take great pride and joy in taking care of our locks, yet hair care mistakes are all too common. Odds are, everyone is making at least one of the following mistakes without realizing it. Well not for long! Read on to learn how you can improve your hair care routine for healthier, happier locks.
Over Brushing
A lot of people tend to think that more brushing = silkier, shinier hair. Instead, anything more than the bare minimum can cause an increased risk of breakage. We recommend brushing lightly twice a day, in the morning and at night. Brushing is good because it helps distribute natural oils from your scalp, so don’t view it as the enemy. Rather, practice moderation and delicacy. Other brushing tips include brushing from the tips and slowly working your way up, so as to avoid compounding knots. Do the majority of brushing before you shower, because wet hair is weaker. And perhaps most importantly, make sure you’re using the right brush for your hair type.
Neglecting your scalp
Ya know when you go to the salon, and they wash your hair with their magic fingers? That scalp massage feels incredible, right? Well, it not only feels revitalizing, it literally is. A deep scalp scrub has tons of benefits. It helps unclog your hair follicles that easily accumulate build-up, and it stimulates blood circulation, encouraging new growth. It also delivers your shampoo/conditioner’s restorative ingredients to the skin, which needs it just as much as your hair does. Plus, it helps distribute your head’s naturally-produced oils down through your hair. So, next time you wash your hair (and every time after that) make sure to give your scalp the extra attention it needs.
Using the wrong products
Unfortunately, the great majority of hair products are loaded with harsh chemicals that take a toll, despite the promises made on the bottle. What’s more, most of these products are complicit in animal cruelty. Testing on animals is a long-outdated, and with modern alternatives, no company has an excuse to continue these inhumane methods. Research the brands you support and look for the Leaping Bunny certification. All of our products are Leaping Bunny certified, meaning they meet the strict requirements of all raw ingredients, manufacturers, and fragrance components to be 100% cruelty free. Also keep an eye out for common chemical ingredients such as sulfates, parabens, synthetic fragrances, silicones, and formaldehyde. Our products are chemical-free, instead relying on all-natural ingredients such as aloe vera, sunflower seed oil, Rose of Jericho, and a variety of essential oils. Not only do harsh chemicals damage your hair/scalp, but they also get absorbed into your bloodstream and negatively impact your body in ways you can’t see or feel.
Skipping the conditioner
Conditioner is equally important as shampoo, and without it you’re likely to experience dryness and breakage. Conditioner’s job is to moisturize and heal your hair, leaving it soft and supple. If you don’t want brittle hair, don’t skip the conditioner. Our Resurrecting Rinse delivers weightless hydration, utilizing the restorative properties of Rose of Jericho to revitalize from roots to ends. Leave-in conditioning treatments, like our Resurrecting Balm, are perfect for making up for lost time if you’ve been skipping conditioner for a while. Just use it after you shampoo/condition in the shower for all-day benefits.
Overlooking the importance of a healthy diet
We all know it - you are what you eat. A well-balanced diet and sufficient hydration is a key component in every hair-care routine. While you can certainly seek out certain foods that will support your hair goals, the most important thing is just to eat whole, healthy foods. We’re talking, greens, fruits, and proteins. Avoiding processed foods is always a good idea, but every now and then won’t hurt. As long as you have balance in your diet, you should be good to go. If you feel like you’re still not getting enough nutrients in your food, there’s always the option of supplements.

To The Shop]]>Have you ever thought to yourself, why does my hair (x,y,z)? Turns out, we all have. We’ve taken some of the most commonly asked questions to deliver some much needed answers. Hair ya go:
Why does my hair…
Fall out in the shower
A light amount of shedding is natural, but if you feel like an excessive amount of hair falls out when you shower, it may be due to harmful ingredients in your hair care products. That’s why, at House of Dear, we make sure all of our ingredients are chemical free and derived straight from Mother Earth. Another way to reduce hair loss is by focusing on mental health, because high levels of stress not only lead to excess shedding but also early graying. Taking care of your body from the inside out is a step that really shouldn’t be skipped, so eat well, hydrate, and use all-natural products.
Hurt at the roots
Your hair follicles are packed with itty-bitty nerve endings that can become inflamed when not treated with care. Pain in these nerves is typically caused by blockage. This can happen if you wait too long between washes, rely heavily on dry shampoo, or use the wrong kind of shampoo. If your shampoo doesn’t contain the ingredients needed to hydrate your actual skin, your scalp will likely overcompensate by producing too much sebum. This can also cause a clog, so be sure to pick a shampoo that understands the importance of hydration - because it’s not just the conditioner’s job.
Always get tangled
If tangled hair is a recurring problem, that’s a clear sign of a lack of moisture. When your hair is dry, it gets knotted, as opposed to when it’s hydrated, it glides more freely. While hydrating from the inside out is one of the secrets to life, you’ve got to hydrate from the outside too. What this ultimately comes down to is the products you use. Look for natural ingredients that are proven to lock in moisture, like Rose of Jericho, which prevents cells from drying out. Or Aloe Vera, which we all know is famous for its hydrating properties. These ingredients, as well as other hydration masters such as Sunflower Seed Oil, can be found in all of our ingredients.
Itch a lot
An itchy scalp is also a sign of dryness, which can also lead to flaking. A common misconception is that you shouldn’t apply conditioner to your scalp, but that’s actually not true. A lot of people think this will result in oiliness, but actually neglecting to moisturize your scalp is what causes the overproduction of sebum. Try taking the advice from the tangled response, and if things don’t improve then maybe it’s time to see a dermatologist about a prescription shampoo.
Not hold a style
Some hair just doesn’t stay put. Usually, this is the case with more fine hair types, and there’s not much that can be done other than using styling products. We all know hairspray can hold a look… too well. Unfortunately it also restricts movement/bounce, gives a terrible feel to your hair, and can be hard to wash out. Plus, it can be very damaging. Instead of reaching for the toxic hairspray, try our Finishing Salve. It’s perfect for locking in any number of frizz-controlled styles, and it nourishes your hair throughout the day.
Smell funny
If you’ve noticed a less than pleasant smell coming from your hair, even shortly after a fresh wash, that’s probably mildew. Mildew is (brace yourself) a form of fungus that grows in damp places, including your hair if left wet too long. This can happen if you tend to put your hair up to dry, like in a braid or bun. Try towel drying your hair and leaving it down while it dries so that it can get plenty of ventilation. If that doesn’t work, you may want to start blowdrying it on a low heat setting. Using hair products with appealing fragrances always helps too. In our collection, we rely on essential oils such as Jasmine, Bergamot, Mandarin, Lavender, Tangerine, and Patchouli for a natural, crowd-pleasing scent palate.
Get frizzy
Frizzy hair happens to the best of us, and is another consequence of hydration-deprivation. Our Resurrecting Balm is great for staving off stray-aways because it contains the trifecta of frizz-fighting ingredients. Sunflower Seed Oil contains tons of vitamins and minerals, including oleic acid and omega 9 acid, which are needed to stop breakage and stimulate hair growth, cutting down on frizz and adding shine.

To The Shop]]>Whether you’re new to the beard life or you’ve been living it for as long as you can remember, there are always improvements to be made. Working in the hair care industry, we’ve come to realize that most men assume that beard care is a no brainer. Sure, you can get by with minimal effort, but will your beard really be looking its best? In short, no.
There’s actually a lot that goes into a nice beard, from look to feel and everything in between. What it mostly boils down to is the products you use, and the ingredients they contain. As a general rule of thumb, you should always avoid products that contain chemicals such as sulfates, parabens, silicones, and alcohols. Instead, opt for formulas that rely on nature-made ingredients, such as sunflower seed oil, aloe vera, and Rose of Jericho.
Skin Care
When it comes to nurturing a great beard, it all starts at the roots. That’s right, the skin underneath your beard needs just as much TLC as the hair itself. When choosing products, search for those that understand this necessity. Beard care products that nourish your hair and skin will make all the difference in both look and feel.
If your beard ever feels itchy, that’s likely because you’re not hydrating the skin beneath it. This doesn’t mean you should start lathering your beard-skin with lotion, because that would wreak havoc on your beard-hair. Instead, choose moisturizing products, like our Resurrecting Wash and Rinse. This product combo is great because they both contain sunflower seed oil, which is known to be one of the best products for beard care due to its high contents of Vitamin A and E. Vitamin A helps the glands on the skin produce sebum, an oily substance that moisturizes the skin and keeps hair healthy. Vitamin E reduces bacteria that contributes to product buildup and dry skin.
An itchy beard can also be due to a buildup of natural oils that can get trapped in the follicles, which is the result of an insufficient washing routine. Having a proper shampooing/conditioning routine is the most basic step towards achieving your beard goals.
Texture Maintenance
While you may think the texture of your beard is out of your control, that’s far from the truth. While genes of course influence the thickness of your hair, the feel can be dramatically improved with the help of a great product. If your beard is wiry and dry, you should consider using a hair treatment from time to time to get it feeling soft and supple again. Not only will this make your beard rest more comfortably on your face, but it will also save your special someone’s skin too.
Our Resurrecting Balm works miracles on dry, coarse hair by instantly revitalizing each strand with healing ingredients Rose of Jericho, Sunflower seed oil and Pure Aloe Vera. In addition to making your facial hair irresistibly smooth, this intensive treatment will give your beard the light, naturally clean smell of essential oils. In addition to using a treatment for texture maintenance, it's also important to use conditioner just as often as you use shampoo.
Styling
Having a well-nourished beard doesn’t automatically mean it’s looking its best. To ensure that your beard is reaching its full potential, you’re gonna want to learn how to style it. For some, this may just mean regular combing and wet-shaping, but for best results, a product is required. A nice styling product can lock in your desired look for the whole day, from early morning meetings to late night drinks.
Our Finishing Salve fights frizz and helps maintain shape, preventing your beard from the constant bed-head look it might have without the help of a specialized product. Not only does it help with styling, but of course the ingredients work to promote hair growth, prevent itchiness, and aid in cell regeneration.
Shaping
Last but not least, shaping plays a key role in beard care. Whether you go to your hair stylist for regular beard upkeep, or you prefer to do the heavy lifting yourself, it’s essential to regularly shave, trim and brush your beard. Beard shaping is somewhat of an art, and very few can do at home what a specialist can do at the salon.
Making sure the growth looks clean and controlled is no easy task, and ideal shape actually varies greatly depending on your facial features. Whether you like to fade from cheek to beard, or prefer a sharp contrast, there are secrets to success that can only be learned in cosmetology school.
What you should know if you’re shaping at home, is that your face shape should determine your beard shape. You should also be sure to trim stray hairs (like the ones that hang over your lips), brush in one direction, pay attention to your neckline, and don’t forget about your sideburns.
Nobody likes a frizzy, wiry, untamed beard. Even the bushiest, grizzliest of beards can benefit from some basic care. In summary, your beard is only as good as the products you use, so don’t skimp because your beard is a huge part of your first impression. While it may seem like a lot to take in, beard care effort can still remain minimal for maximized results with just a bit of focused attention.
To The Shop]]>When it comes to hair care, there’s tons of misinformation out there. While some of these misconceptions stem from roots in reality, the great majority are just total nonsense. Let’s dive into the top five myths we see most, and learn why they’re not true.
1. Frequent hair-washing is bad
This is only true when using products with harsh chemicals like sulfates, parabens, silicones, and alcohols. These harmful ingredients strip the hair and scalp of their natural oils, causing dry and brittle results.
With hair care products that utilize the gifts of mother nature, rather than lab-made, animal tested chemicals, frequent washing is nothing to worry about. Everyone’s hair is different, so it's important to base your washing schedule on your individual needs. Some like to wash every day, while others prefer to wait a whole week. As long as you’re choosing the right products, you can wash like there's no tomorrow.
2. Rinsing with cold water locks in shine
Unfortunately cold water is not the magic fix-all trick for shiny hair. What many people think cold water can do is actually the job of your conditioner. A good conditioner works to deliver nutrition to both the scalp and the hair follicles, delivering a weightless sheen. In addition to the long-term healing properties, conditioner also gives an immediate shine by smoothing down the scales on each strand of hair.
For hair that needs a little extra help beyond the capabilities of conditioner, try our Resurrecting Balm that instantly revitalizes damaged hair.
3. Hair-coloring causes damage
Again, this depends entirely on the products being used. If your salon uses harsh dyes that rely on strong chemicals, there’s a good chance your hair will pay the price with its health. We get that sometimes harsh dyes are unavoidable, like when going from dark to light can only be accomplished with the use of bleach. That’s why we make take-home products that compliment this process and maintain the integrity of the hair throughout.
If your hair tends to feel dry and breakable in the weeks after a color treatment, you should try asking your hairdresser about what’s in the products they use. It may be time to find a new salon that uses all-natural products that put your hair’s health above all else — because if your locks aren’t healthy, it’ll be harder and harder to make them look like they are.
4. You should change up products from time to time
This myth seems to rely on the idea that your hair can build a sort of “tolerance” to products used over an extended period of time. While that may be true with other things, like coffee and certain medications, it definitely does not apply to hair care.
In fact, your hair and skin benefit from routine, and don’t usually like having to adjust to different products on the reg. If you want your hair to look and feel its best, find a product line that utilizes the power of natural ingredients, and wean off of any harsh formulas you’ve been using before.
5. Fine/oily hair doesn't need conditioner
If your hair is naturally oily or ultra-fine, you may think that conditioner will cause a grease overload. Oh contraire! Oftentimes, excess sebum (oil) production is a sign of a dry scalp trying to overcompensate. Conditioning the hair and scalp can help lessen the natural production of excess oils by providing the moisture your head needs.
You may be thinking that those natural oils should be able to provide the same moisturizing benefits of conditioner, but that’s not fully true. While sebum can certainly provide a bit of hydration, it’s incapable of delivering the same level of nutrition and protection as a great conditioner.
Now that you know the truth about hair care, you can give your hair the treatment it deserves. Shop the House of Dear collection and realize the unmatched healing power of our unique botanical blend.

Benefits of routines include decreased stress and increased health, focus, and productivity (verywellmind.com). The energy we would normally spend making that series of decisions is conserved and put to better use.
Your haircare routine is an opportunity to reset, recharge and restore your energy. Washing and conditioning hair is not only a cleansing ritual, but it is also an opportunity to rid the body of toxins and buildup. Unfortunately, mainstream haircare products squander this opportunity for many because these products contain toxic chemicals we would be avoiding at all costs if only we knew the harsh reality in which we were soaking our scalps.
Incorporating natural, clean, cruelty free products into your haircare routine will ensure you maximize your selfcare ROI. Ingredients pulled from nature and purely processed provide your body, mind and spirit with the nutrients needed to truly restore your being.

When it comes to hair and beauty products, it is important to keep ingredients as close to nature as possible.
To The Shop]]>Like skin, hair needs to maintain a certain moisture balance in order to maintain its suppleness and overall beauty. Daily exposure to environmental stresses, styling heat torture and chemical exposure deplete hair’s moisture leaving it parched, dry and brittle.

Harnessing the rejuvenating benefits of the desert flower, Rose of Jericho, Sunflower Seed Oil & Pure Aloe Vera, hair expert and salon owner, Holly Dear, has found a way to resurrect dry, brittle hair. The Rose of Jericho is truly a miraculous find. This botanical beauty is practically indestructible, and can be brought back to life again and again. Its incredible reparative properties provide protection and moisture to the scalp, fight frizz, and add lustrous shine and volume.

Take the Quiz]]>Hair is made up of proteins (keratin), lipids, and water. Hair damage is the result of compromising the structural integrity of these components. When we focus on nurturing hair from the inside out, not only can we repair existing damage, but we can also encourage new, stronger hair growth.
If you are using hair products or styling agents that contain parabens, sulfates or silicones, cease and desist (see previous blog post for a breakdown of Ingredients Commonly Found in Other Hair “Care” Products). The first phase of weaning off unhealthy hair products is to replace them with clean products. The simplest way to narrow down your clean product options is to focus on Leaping Bunny Certified products. The Leaping Bunny Certification requires all raw ingredients, fragrance components and manufacturers of a product to be 100% cruelty free (we will expand on this topic in a future blog post). Focus on one product at a time--find a clean shampoo and conditioner, then look at your styling agents, then take steps to avoid heat damage--integrate clean beauty into your lifestyle. Remember, anything that is put on the skin or scalp is absorbed into the bloodstream; the food and products we consume code our DNA and fuel cell growth. You truly are what you consume.
Let the healing process begin! The second phase of weaning off unhealthy hair products is to encourage the hair and scalp’s natural healing process. Your hair has been through weeks, months or years of routine damage--understanding that damage can help us heal faster:
Finally, the third phase of weaning off unhealthy hair products is to maintain a clean hair care lifestyle and be aware of “necessary damage”. As long as we are washing and styling, we will continue to inflict damage upon our locks--even the humidity from a shower is actually causing damage to the hair, so awareness is key. If we know what we are depriving our hair of, we can make up for it with self-care. Regularly using hair care products that support the nutritional needs of hair and maintaining a healthy diet will provide hair with the necessary fuel to thrive.
To The Shop]]>The majority of us are accustomed to checking the labels on our food and skin care regime before we buy it, but what about our hair products? Do you really know what you put on your hair every day?
When it comes to harmful hair product ingredients, there are a couple of things that you really need to focus on:
Parabens mimic the structure of estrogen, so your body allows it to penetrate into the body and the body accepts it, negatively affecting hormones in the body. Parabens have been linked to major health issues. People don’t realize that what we put on our skin and scalp can leach into our body, so it’s vitally important that we pay attention to these things. Parabens are a waxy preservative, so it keeps bacteria out of the shampoo, giving it a longer shelf life. Parabens are a cheap and strong preservative, which is why they are often found in popular hair products at convenience and grocery stores. But there are healthy alternatives to parabens.
Sulfates are aggressive cleansers found in many popular shampoos. There are expensive detergents and non-expensive detergents. Sulfates are non-expensive detergents. They make your hair lather with sudsy bubbles, bringing your ultra cinematic shampooing fantasies to life. In reality, the aggressive nature of sulfates creates friction on the hair, resulting in flyaways, frizz and color stripping. This dries out and breaks down hair over time, leaving it weak and lifeless, unable to hold color.
Silicones are found in conditioners and styling products. Silicones are very heavy and very hard to remove from hair, causing build up--hence the need for the harsh sulfates. Silicones also block moisture from getting into the hair, further increasing dryness and weakness.
Alcohols are generally found in gels and hairspray. Most short-chained alcohols can be bad, especially for curly hair, but the alcohols found in high quality products are safe for hair and scalp. Short-chain alcohols that you will find in hair care products are ethanol, denatured alcohol, propanol, propyl alcohol, isopropyl alcohol and SD alcohol. These alcohols have very few carbon atoms in their backbones, which means they are liquids that can act as solvents and they can dissolve the natural protective oils in your skin and hair (NaturallyCurly.com).
Due to the intensive nature of these cheap yet harmful ingredients, many popular hair care products do well to create the illusion of healthy hair at the expense of your wellbeing, and the wellbeing of our planet. House of Dear hair products wield the power of botanicals and natural ingredients, a timeless and relaxing fragrance produced by 100% natural oils. Formulated in a Leaping Bunny Certified Cruelty Free process, House of Dear hair products resurrect and restore damaged hair of all types.

SUNFLOWER SEED OIL High in essential fatty acids, ceramides, vitamin E, providing incredible nourishment for your hair and scalp. It's chock full of antioxidants that will keep your hair healthy and strong by reversing free radical damage. Sunflower seed oil is light enough to use on all hair types without leaving it feeling greasy or weighed down.
To The Shop]]>Rose of Jericho is an intense hydrator, rejuvenating the hair and scalp from the inside out. Medicinal in nature, Rose of Jericho is known as the ‘Resurrection Plant’ because it has the ability to bring itself, as well as your hair and scalp, back to life. A member of the spike moss family, the Resurrection Plant is found in the Chihuahuan Desert of the United States and Mexico. This ancient plant can survive for up to seven years without water in dormancy and lose up to 95% of its moisture content without cell or tissue damage, hence the name Resurrection Plant (thespruce.com). The cosmeceutical and phytopharmaceutical properties of Rose of Jericho rejuvenate dry damaged hair and scalp, restoring it to a healthy state.
Oxidation is the primary process through which our hair and skin start to look older -- which is why we love antioxidants. Rose of Jericho contains tons of antioxidants that play a huge role in the plants’ ability to resurrect itself, your hair and scalp after a long period of desiccation. The antioxidant compounds -- Beta-Carotene, Ascorbic Acid, Gamma-Tocopherol -- aid with blood flow and circulation of the scalp, encouraging hair growth, strength and shine.
The most compelling compound present in the Resurrection Plant is a sugar called Trehalose. A naturally occurring disaccharide (sugar), Trehalose is widespread in many species of plants and animals -- commonly found in yeasts, Rose of Jericho is one of only a few vascular flora containing the powerful sugar. The main function of Trehalose appears to be to protect cells against desiccation, but is not found in mammals (ncbi.com). When Trehalose is present, the desiccation phase activates a response that protects the cell membrane from any form of damage associated with the environmental causes of aging, such as daily exposure to chemicals and toxins in the air, UV exposure, noise pollution, anxiety and stress. The Trehalose is actively protecting the hydrogen bonds between and within macromolecules during the desiccation process. This protection retains the structure of the cell membrane, which allows the cells to rehydrate intact. When dried up, the cells are not damaged. In the absence of Trehalose, when a plant (or your hair) dries up, it shrinks, shrivels and breaks. But in the presence of Trehalose this does not happen -- the cell membranes remain intact and are perfectly restored upon rehydration (AfricanPlantHunter).
Arbutin is another key cosmeceutical found in Rose of Jericho. High levels of Arbutin found in the Resurrection Plant cure dehydration at the root by protecting the lipids in your skin cells at the scalp from peroxidizing (which is another cause of premature aging). Oxidation is the combination of a substance with oxygen while peroxidation is an oxidation reaction that produces a peroxide. Peroxidation is what causes damage within a cell during desiccation. The sun is a massive source of oxidation. Our skin naturally produces melanin in response to UV damage, resulting in sun spots and hair damage. The Hydroquinone produced by Arbutin inhibits peroxidation of unsaturated lipids, playing a very significant role in protecting cell integrity.

To The Shop]]>Historians believe that the Sunflower was the first ever crop domesticated by the Native Americans about 5,000 years ago in the Mexico territory of the Americas -- the whole plant was used for food and medicine, (i.e. seeds ground up to make flour, oil used for cooking & healing, etc.). By the mid-1800s, Sunflower Seed Oil was being used and sold across the world for its benefits in cooking and beauty regimens. Sunflower Seed Oil is derived from a non-GMO crop, which means it is one of the only naturally non-GMO oils in the marketplace.
Sunflower Seed Oil contains tons of vitamins and minerals, including oleic acid and omega 9 acid, which are needed to stop breakage and stimulate hair growth, cutting down on frizz and adding shine. This oil has very high levels of vitamins A, C and E (tocopherol):
Sunflower Seed Oil is extremely lightweight and contains low levels of trans fat, which aids in hydrating and strengthening the hair without weighing it down -- it is also one of the best oils for beard care. A natural SPF and thermal protector for the hair, Sunflower Seed Oil is the perfect hair and skin care ingredient for summer.
To The Shop]]>The scalp is the foundation to overall hair health.
That’s why House of Dear is built on the properties of Aloe Vera, Sunflower Seed Oil and Rose of Jericho with the intention of restoring equilibrium and genuinely reviving damaged hair and scalp. One of the oldest plants mentioned in ancient records by rulers, kings, queens, leaders, philosophers and practitioners, Aloe Vera has been listed as a fundamental medicinal source for over 4,000 years, bearing the nickname ‘The Plant of Immortality’. The Aloe Vera that is present in the House of Dear collection is in gel form and Leaping Bunny Certified, which is the purest form that can be used in products.
Why Aloe Vera? Aloe Vera is a natural cleanser, containing thousands of antioxidants belonging to a large family of substances known as polyphenols. These polyphenols, along with several other compounds in Aloe Vera, help inhibit the growth of certain bacteria that can cause infections in humans (MedicalNewsToday.com). These antioxidants strengthen your hair and make your scalp healthier by curing imbalances.
The polyphenols present in Aloe Vera promote balance to the scalp -- so if your scalp is excessively oily or excessively dry and itchy, Aloe can help restore equilibrium. The fatty acids found in the Aloe Vera plant have anti-inflammatory properties. For dry hair, these fatty acids help with dandruff-causing scalp inflammation.
In addition to balancing the scalp, Aloe Vera cleanses the hair shaft by stripping the scalp of excess sebum and residue from hair products. Unlike other cleansing agents, Aloe does not hurt the hair shaft -- it is gentle, preserving the integrity of the hair and scalp. If you are working on an imbalanced scalp issue, I recommend 3 shampoos to get the scalp balanced.
Full of vitamins A, B12, C, and E, Aloe Vera also works to strengthen the hair shaft. Vitamins A, C, and E contribute to cell turnover, promoting healthy cell growth and shiny hair, while vitamin B12 and folic acid are components of Aloe Vera that can keep your hair from falling out. High in collagen, Aloe Vera complements the SPF quality of Sunflower Seed Oil and the resurrecting benefits of Rose of Jericho to work against sun damage, bringing your hair back to life.
